Nail Fungus

Certain fungus and molds commonly found in gyms and public locker rooms are responsible for fingernail and toenail fungus. Nail fungus is more coomon among older adults, especially men, due to diminished blood circulation, more years of exposure to fungi, and slower nail growth. Family history, perspiring heavily, psoriasis, socks and shoes with poor ventilation, walking barefoot in damp, humid public places such as public showers and swimming pools, athletes foot, skin and nail injuries, diabetes, and a weakened immune system are also risk factors for nail fungus.
Symptoms of finger and toenail fungus
Your nail may become discolored, thick, and can be slightly painful. Eventually the nail may fall off. In the meantime, it can become quite distorted and can even turn upward as the fungus attempts to search for more moist air to thrive on. Common signs of nail fungus include:
- Brittle, crumbly or ragged nails
- Dull nails with no luster or shine
- Dark colored nails caused by debris build up under the nail
Causes of nail fungus
Visible cuts near a finger or toenail or a seperation of a nail from the nail bed increase your risk of contracting a nail fungus. When your nails are exposed to moist and warm environments harboring fungi and molds, the fungi can penetrate under the nail and into the skin. An infection is picked up through touching an object that already has a fungal growth on it.
One thing to consider is your immune system's state of health. Fungal infections can develop internally because of poor diet, and living an unhealthy lifestyle. If you're not currently eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, calcium, protein, fiber and Omega-3 oils, then you might want to consider adding vitamin and mineral supplements to your health agenda.
